I only really discovered Bit Torrent last year and have been downloading a few things. I got an email from my ISP today forwarding a copyright infringement notice from Sony Films, claiming I downloaded a movie recently
Beware .... copy of letter below .... RE: Unauthorized Distribution of the Copyrighted Motion Picture Entitled 2012 Dear TPG Abuse Department: We are writing this letter on behalf of Columbia Pictures Industries Inc., ("Columbia Pictures") who owns certain rights under copyright law in the title 2012. You are receiving this notice because your Internet account was identified as having been used recently to copy and/or distribute illegally the copyrighted motion pictures and/or television shows listed at the bottom of this notice. This notice provides you with the information you need in order to take immediate action that can prevent serious legal and other consequences. These actions include: 1. Stop downloading or uploading without authorization any motion pictures or TV shows owned or distributed by Columbia Pictures; and 2. Permanently delete from your computer(s) all unauthorized copies you may have already made of these movies and TV shows. If this notice is being received by an Internet Service Provider (ISP), please forward the notice to the individual associated with the activities. The illegal uploading, downloading, copying and/or distribution of copyrighted works are serious offenses that carry with them the risk of substantial monetary damages and, in some cases, criminal prosecution. Copyright infringement also violates your ISP’s terms of service and could lead to limitation or suspension of your Internet service. You should take immediate action to prevent your Internet account from being used for illegal activities. An MPAA website, www.respectcopyrights.org, offers step-by-step instructions to ensure that your Internet account is not being used to violate the copyright laws. Also, the site can point you to an array of legal choices for enjoying movies and TV shows online. You can also learn there how theft of motion pictures and TV shows damages our economy and costs thousands of Americans their jobs. Please contact us at the above listed address or by replying to this email should you have any questions. We appreciate your assistance and thank you for your cooperation in this matter. In your future correspondence with us, please refer to Case ID 1046419198. Your prompt response is requested. Respectfully, A Kempe Enforcement Coordinator MediaSentry ------------------------------ INFRINGEMENT DETAIL -------------------- Infringing Work: 2012 First Found: 10 Jan 2010 20:35:44 EST (GMT -0500) Last Found: 10 Jan 2010 20:35:44 EST (GMT -0500) IP Address: 123.243.172.152 IP Port: 36476 Protocol: BitTorrent Torrent InfoHash: 46B84536B6C3404FBF981AB8A66D42D428F2842A Containing file(s): 2012.CAM.XviD-TA.torrent (896,077,454 bytes) |

Thats the first time I have heard of someone being told off by the bigwigs themselves. I don't know if its any good or not but someone recently recommended this "PeerBlock" download and install to stop anyone being able to see content or origin of download. Surely by now though the industry would be able to overcome any such program I reckon???
Just a thought. Thanks for the share Mark. |

I know someone currently being pursued by MGM over Stargate.
There was actually a very large court case that wrapped up late last year. The ISP IInet pretty much went into bat for the privacy of all Australians. If the anti piracy consortium of large companies is succesful. All ISP's will be legally forced to spy on us, and release any information about our browsing to the big entertainment companies, who will then use it as proof of copywrite infringement in court. The Judge said he expected to release his descision early this year. |

Bugger
But seriously, who doesn't have at least one movie in their home, that came via the net. It's like when VHS came out, we were all told it was illegal to tape movies and TV, but the recorders and tape could be bought legally everywhere. Things have only improved since. I have heard/read of a few movies released recently, that once released they were making a concentrated effort to stop any unauthorised copies. I guess with a major title like 2012, they may have done the same? |

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search MediaSentry Successor Peer Media Technologies Founded 2001 Defunct 2009 Headquarters New York City, New York, United States Industry Network monitoring for copyright enforcement Parent SafeNet (2005-2009) Artistdirect (2009-) Website www.mediasentry.com MediaSentry was a United States company that provided services to the music recording, motion picture, television, and software industries for locating and identifying IP addresses that are engaged in the use of online networks to share material in a manner said organizations claim is in violation of copyright. Their most notable customers were several trade associations including the Motion Picture Association of America and International Federation of the Phonographic Industry. The company provided several services for this purpose, such as monitoring popular forums for copyright infringement, aid in litigation, early leak detection, and the distribution of decoy files.[1] MediaSentry also monitored auction sites such as eBay for distribution of pirated software and other property. On 13 June 2005 MediaSentry was acquired by SafeNet.[2] SafeNet sold the MediaSentry division to Artistdirect in April 2009.[3] In late 2007 the University of Oregon, represented by Oregon Attorney General Hardy Myers, refused to provide information on its students to the RIAA, questioning the tactics used by MediaSentry in one of its investigations.[4] The next year Central Michigan University accused MediaSentry of violating its students' privacy[5] after the company ignored a ruling that it was illegally operating without a private investigator's license.[6] In January 2009 the RIAA canceled their usage of MediaSentry for undisclosed reasons.[7] In August 2009, ARTISTdirect restructured MediaDefender and MediaSentry, creating Peer Media Technologies. Tell them to fuck off Mark, your privacy is being invaded and MediaSentry does not exist now, its been restructured. |

Step 1: Download peerguardian Step 2: Download torrents Step 3: ??? Step 4: PROFIT!@!! Totally agree, have been using torrents for ages and as long as you have PeerGuardian running it filters out specific IP addresses for P2P users. Not 100% safe but much better than not having anything running. The problem is that now a lot of torrents are dieing as a result of being chased by the money grabbers. So a lot of stuff is harder to get. |

Ditch torrents and start using Usenet binaries.
Maximum download speed, no monitoring. |

Ignored it and nothing adverse has occurred to me.
Mine was advising that I should secure my connection in case anyone wirelessly was accessing my ISP (a polite way of saying that "we don't want to say it's YOU but still express the warning). |

TPG doesnt and never will care about those emails, bascially MGM or whoever picks up an infringement and passes it onto TPG, if TPG dont send the email they get in trouble, but if they do and you ignore it, then they honestly dont care. just jump on whirlpool.net.au and there a heaps of people getting these and ignoring them, they cant touch you (yet)
